Effect of air pressure on the electro-generation of H2O2 and the abatement of organic pollutants in water by electro-Fenton process

Abstract The electro-generation of H 2 O 2 and the abatement of the model organic pollutant Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in water by an electro-Fenton process were performed under moderate air pressures (up to 11 bar) for the first time to our knowledge. An increase of the pressure gave rise to a drastic enhancement of the concentration of hydrogen peroxide. In systems pressurized with air at 11 bar, the electro reduction of oxygen at a graphite cathode gave rise to a concentration of H 2 O 2 of about 12 mM, about one order of magnitude higher than that achieved at atmospheric pressure. Recovery of dissolved methane through a flat sheet module with PDMS, PP, and PVDF membranes

Abstract A degassing contactor using a flat sheet membrane module (FM) was operated in sweep gas mode to study the performance of several commercial polymer membranes, both dense (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) and microporous (polypropylene, PP, and polyvinylidenefluoride, PVDF), for the recovery of dissolved methane from water. Non-steady state experiments were conducted at different liquid (QL, 3.5–40.5 L h-1) and gas flow rates (QN2, 0.05–15.00 L h-1). In the case of PDMS, PP, and when PVDF was operated at moderate high QL (≥ 21 L h-1), similar methane removal efficiencies (RE) were obtained. Size dependent light absorption modulation and enhanced carrier transport in germanium quantum dots devices

Quantum confinement in closely packed arrays of Ge quantum dots (QDs) was studied for energy applications. In this work, we report an efficient tuning mechanism of the light harvesting and detection of Ge QDs. Thin films of SiGeO alloys, produced by rf-magnetron sputtering, were annealed at 600 degrees C in N-2 to induce precipitation of small amorphous Ge QDs into the oxide matrix. Varying the Ge content, the QD size was tailored between 2 and 4 nm, as measured by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements indicate the formation of pure SiO2, as well as the presence of a sub-stoichiometric Ge oxide shell at the QD interface. Light …
Transcriptomic and proteomic insights of the wine yeast biomass propagation process

Transcriptome and proteome profiles have been established for the commercial wine yeast strain T73 during an important industrial process: yeast biomass propagation. The data from both analyses reveal that the metabolic transition from fermentation to respiration is the most critical step in biomass propagation. We identified 177 ORFs and 56 proteins among those most expressed during the process, thus highlighting cell stress response, mitochondrial and carbohydrate metabolism as the most represented functional categories. Measurement of multi-jet cross sections in proton-proton collisions at a 7 TeV center-of-mass energy

Inclusive multi-jet production is studied in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.4 pb−1. Results on multi-jet cross sections are presented and compared to both leading-order plus parton-shower Monte Carlo predictions and to next-to-leading-order QCD calculations.

Context. Coronal mass ejections (CME's) are one of the most violent phenomena found on the Sun. One model to explain their occurrence is the flux rope ejection model. In this model, magnetic flux ropes form slowly over time periods of days to weeks. They then lose equilibrium and are ejected from the solar corona over a few hours. The contrasting time scales of formation and ejection pose a serious problem for numerical simulations. Aims: We simulate the whole life span of a flux rope from slow formation to rapid ejection and investigate whether magnetic flux ropes formed from a continuous magnetic field distribution, during a quasi-static evolution, can erupt to produce a CME. Stability of hexaquarks in the string limit of confinement

The stability of systems containing six quarks or antiquarks is studied within a simple string model inspired by the strong-coupling regime of quantum chromodynamics and used previously for tetraquarks and pentaquarks. We discuss both six-quark $(q^6)$ and three-quark--three-antiquark $ (q^3\bar q{}^3)$ states. The quarks are assumed to be distinguishable and thus not submitted to antisymmetrization. It is found that the ground state of $(q^6)$ is stable against dissociation into two isolated baryons. For the case of $ (q^3\bar q{}^3)$, our results indicate the existence of a bound state very close to the threshold. The investigations are extended to $(q^3Q^3)$ and $(Q^3\bar q^3)$ systems w…
